Discouragement can happen to anyone and in many situations, it results in disappointment even before the action is taken.
For example, the fear of being tested or being watched when doing something new that you have never done before, especially if it is the first time you do it and it goes wrong, you will be even more afraid and will not dare to do it or avoid doing it again.
Or the feeling of giving up on doing anything when faced with criticism from people around you, being afraid and worried about being gossiped about, or thinking that you can’t do it, so you choose to give up and not do it.
This type of easy discouragement is the result of our attitude and perspective towards ourselves, as well as our mindset that is attached to certain beliefs that prevent us from overcoming our fears, anxieties or obstacles that we encounter.
It reminds me of the old saying, “Believe in what you will receive.”
If we tend to believe in things that are not good for us, and we view everything negatively, it will cause us to not achieve or not succeed in the things that we should.
So how do we overcome our negative thoughts?
Let’s take a look at examples of people who have overcome problems and obstacles without giving up. What methods did they use to overcome these things?
“If we give up because of insults, there would be no legend like Michael Jordan today.”
Michael Jordan, legendary basketball player for the Chicago Bulls and in the NBA.
Who would have thought that in the past, Michael Jordan didn’t like playing basketball at all? But his favorite sport at that time was baseball, and he was good at it and had talent in it.
So how did you suddenly become a basketball player?
It happened during Michael’s childhood when he played basketball with his older brother. It turned out that Michael would lose in the games regularly, so he had to put in a lot of effort to beat his brother. That was the turning point that made him interested in basketball. He practiced hard until his skills progressed and developed rapidly without him knowing it.
Even if you are good and can develop quickly, there are still obstacles.
During high school, Michael attended a summer basketball camp to try out for the school’s basketball team, but he was not selected for the team.
The coach gave the reason why he was not selected for the school team, saying that Michael was too small, and also told him, “Someone like you is just a ball boy on the sidelines.”
Michael replied, “I will be the best basketball player in the world. You just have to wait and see.”
After that, he was determined, focused, and trained hard. Eventually, he was able to play in the NBA with the Chicago Bulls and became a great legend in the basketball world.
Michael Jordan’s story shows us several factors that contributed to his success, including:
People can be good and successful without necessarily having talent in a certain area.
Determination, dedication and determination are important and necessary ingredients that will lead us to success.
Insults and disrespect from anyone are not an obstacle to training and self-development.
But the most obvious and obvious thing that Michael Jordan shows is that he has a good attitude towards himself and has a growth mindset .
Because beliefs or ways of thinking affect behavior, perspectives and attitudes.
Carol Dweck, author of Mindset: The New Psychology of Success (2007), is the creator of the Mindset Theory. She has studied human behavior and classified people’s mindsets into two types:
People who have a fixed mindset:
- They are a group of people who tend to judge themselves quickly that they are intelligent, have effort but are only capable to a certain level. They are people who tend to worry all the time that they like to think about themselves in a negative way, such as thinking that they are not good enough, will they be able to do this or not? If they can’t, will other people see them as stupid or incompetent? Will they feel like they are a loser? Etc.
People with a growth mindset:
- They are a group of people who believe that each person’s qualities and foundation can be changed. Everyone can be developed to be better than before through effort. People can grow from training and learning, such as the example of Michael Jordan who was not talented in basketball from the beginning. But he admitted that he was not good at it. But with determination, intention and wanting to improve, instead of giving up, he started practicing and did not get discouraged by insults and belittling.
This story opens our eyes to another perspective.
People who do not have the knowledge or skills in that matter before can also be successful by having a growth mindset. Because people with this kind of mindset believe that everything can be developed, are not afraid of mistakes, accept their own weaknesses, and are ready to fix them in order to achieve their goals.
The topic of Growth Mindset has become another important skill that has been taught and instilled since childhood, such as in sports, education, or even in the workplace.
Famous athletes or those who are successful in this era all have important main components that come from having a Growth Mindset.
Growth Mindset can be learned and practiced at any age.
If we believe that “a good attitude and the right way of thinking will take us further” and we are ready to open our minds, accept what is, and believe that our lives can be better than before, then we are ready to learn this skill.

Fixed Mindset is a common problem in work or at work.
