Human Resource Management, Human Resources Department, managing and caring for more than 4000 people at Thammasat University Hospital, taking care of income, welfare, and every human matter of the hospital’s officers and employees. The working principles that must use a human heart in order to care for people all come from goodwill, love, and understanding of employees at all levels.
From the last time we went to explore outpatient nursing in all 13 units plus 2 units that are centers of excellence for heart and allergy diseases. We cannot deny that Thai people and allergies have been together since childhood. We have heard people say that they are allergic to the air or to food, which is mostly caused by the environment and pollution that we have to face during the day. If we can maintain the 4Es such as Exercise Eating Environment and Emotion as the doctor said, we can easily have a strong and healthy body.
Now, the admin will take everyone to go deeper into the office of Thammasat University Hospital. It is not a department with doctors or nurses, it is not a department where we have to go for treatment, but it is a department that will help develop human resources in every part of the hospital. They are the human resource management department. Today, we have Ms. Natthapani Khunkhuntod, Head of Resource Management, Ms. Pariyaporn Chuanjit, Human Resource Officer, and Ms. Wattana Ramkul, Human Resource Developer, Thammasat University Hospital to introduce this department to us so that we can get to know it better.
What is Human Resource Management?
Take care of all personnel in the hospital, from doctors in both academic and operational fields, nurses, officers, employees, and external personnel who come in to work part-time, all personnel, which currently has more than 4,000 personnel working for the hospital.
“The difficulty increases with the variety.”
Within the hospital, there are many types of employees, for example, government officials, university employees, permanent employees, temporary employees, hospital employees, external employees, etc. The diversity of personnel in each department makes human resource management here more difficult than elsewhere. In the context of human resource management, it is necessary to clearly divide who is in charge of what, separating them into groups for easier management.

“Human Resource Management”
Management will be about managing salaries, compensation, overtime pay, welfare, employee and personnel evaluations, and various benefits of all personnel in the hospital. It also includes managing the recruitment of personnel and removing personnel when personnel have inadequate work potential or do not meet the criteria.
“More than just HR work”
The work in HR that you definitely can’t find anywhere else is coordination with foreign countries. Most of the work involves requesting medical records, treatment history, medication history, and coordination between doctors and patients. This type of work is not available in general HR departments, but here it is. It is similar to public relations and communication, communicating with the hospital or contacting foreigners.
Human Resource Development (HRD)
Take care of human resource development, training, what each staff member and each department lacks, what they want to learn more, what needs to be added, how to find those things for them. Mostly, staff will inform us what kind of training they want, what kind of development they want. Originally, there will be training to provide knowledge to staff every year anyway. But if it doesn’t meet what is needed or staff members need to learn or train outside of the plan set by HRD, just inform the human resource management department to arrange additional training.
“We don’t just develop our personnel, we also have to be able to develop the organization at the same time.”
In addition to training, HRD’s work also includes analyzing data on the qualifications, abilities, and potential of all personnel and then developing personnel further. HRD’s work itself does not only develop personnel, but we must also be able to develop the organization at the same time.

“HR itself must develop itself in order to develop others.”
The diversity of professions that come together to work in the hospital makes HRD have to develop training courses or develop individual people who have different professions, abilities, and learning, or even the context in which they work. The HRD department has to find courses or development that are appropriate for each group of people. It is a challenge and fun that even personnel in human resource management themselves have to develop themselves in order to develop others.

COVID-19 and coping
During the first wave of COVID-19, there was work from home everywhere, but Thammasat University Hospital did not have it because it is a hospital that cannot allow all staff to work from home. It must be open to provide services to the public. Everyone who comes to work here must already know that it is work in the context of a hospital. It must work for the public.
“We work equally. If he comes, we come.”
All personnel must understand that we work equally. Even those who work in the office, who are not doctors or nurses, must also work at the hospital. For equality, that we work for the same organization, doctors, nurses, and medical personnel do not have a day off. The personnel who work in the office do not have a day off either. If we take good care of each other, all personnel are ready to work for the organization as best as possible.
“We will take care of each other like siblings.”
Human resource management is a department with people of many ages mixed together. Working in a large organization like this, there must be diversity in terms of age gaps. Differences are bound to occur. There are many ages, but the department emphasizes taking care of each other like seniors taking care of juniors. Therefore, there must be an understanding before hiring new personnel. There must be a discussion first.
“We use our teaching experience. He uses his expertise that is up-to-date with the times to teach.”
The work of the new generation who just graduated will work with people who have been working for a long time in the organization with understanding because working does not mean that the new generation who come in must only listen to their seniors. The seniors must also listen to their juniors. Give each other half and then adjust to each other. The important thing in working in human resource management is that we must know and understand people. The importance of people management is here.
“I am happy to be working here.”
If outsiders say that HR is easy, from their perspective, they can see it that way and it’s not wrong. But in reality, managing 4,000 people is not easy at all. Therefore, within the department, everyone is taken care of very well and tries to understand each other in every matter. They know that everyone is tired. Working here is hard. They have to take care of work, contact, and coordinate, such as doctors or nurses who come to contact outside of work hours or ask questions and explain their needs. The HR department will try to help, find, and allocate them because they know that all the personnel are tired. The HR department wants to help and support them as much as possible.

“We always think that we have to help ourselves, no matter what problems they are facing.”
Everyone in the department will always think that they must help every staff member, not hurt them, no matter if they are in trouble or have something wrong, try to help them as much as possible, unless that staff member chooses his own path, if he does something wrong, then that is wrong, let him be punished according to his own wrong. Nowadays, in this situation, it is difficult to find a new job. The HR department does not want to be cruel to anyone to find a new job or struggle outside.
Summary
No matter what happens, everything that changes will definitely change for the better. Nothing will change for the worse. Therefore, see every change, no matter what it is, as a change for the better. Then we will be able to catch up with others. Even if we are a little slower, we must follow. Let’s push each other along. Don’t think that you are bad. If you know you can’t keep up, try. One day, you will be able to keep up with others, or maybe even lead them.
“The most important thing in human resource management is that we must know and understand people.”
