We have probably seen talented and capable people at work, but they made mistakes because of their emotions, causing them to lose opportunities and a good future.
Mistakes due to emotions are the cause of problems at work or are problems that cause many people to end their careers or, worse, may even destroy their own careers.
For example, there is a story about a young woman who was once considered a rising star in the advertising industry. However, her career ended terribly, even though she was a talented and capable person. But it’s a pity that she had to end up like this.
The story of Nong Ning
Nong Ning is a fresh graduate with a first-class honors degree. She has been working at her first job with a large advertising company for about 3 months. From her appearance, Nong Ning is a lovely person, speaks well, and has a good attitude towards people around her.
“He may look good on the outside, but inside, his heart may be different.”
But then one day, after Nong Ning was criticized for her sloppy work by her boss and colleagues at a meeting,
Nong Ning also showed signs of being arguing with her boss and colleagues with a harsh tone and words, as if she were a completely different person. She also blamed others for her mistakes, such as blaming the customer for not giving complete information and not being clear, and blaming everyone for not understanding what she was thinking, calling everyone old-fashioned, and so on.
The result was that Nong Ning did not have a good ending. She received a warning letter about her behavior and was suspended from work for 1 week.
But after the suspension period ended, Nong Ning never returned to work here again, and no one has been able to contact Nong Ning again. To this day, no one knows what happened to her.
It’s really a pity. A talented person like Nong Ning is a pity for such a good job and the opportunity to work with a world-class giant.
In the world of work, everyone has the chance to make mistakes. And how can we improve our work that resulted from mistakes if we don’t start by accepting criticism or feedback from others?
Nong Ning’s story is another example that shows the problem of controlling emotions .
In the workplace, we often see cases similar to Nong Ning’s, where mistakes are made due to emotions, such as people who have problems controlling their emotions. When faced with something they are not happy with, or something they are not happy with, or words they do not like, their behavior will be extremely different from when they are in a normal state, becoming completely different people.
The consequences may be similar to Nong Ning’s case, or in some cases, it may be worse, meaning that there is no future in working here. Or, in worse cases, you may be fired. The results of not being able to control your emotions are nothing but losses.
“Why do people have problems controlling their emotions?”
The starting point of this issue may be since childhood. When we were children, did we learn and practice controlling our emotions and expressing our emotions in the right way? These things should start at the family level so that we can understand and recognize our emotions and express our emotions appropriately.
Therefore, the matter of Emotional Intelligence plays a very important role because it is an important skill that should be learned from childhood and the family plays a very important role in promoting learning and training this skill.
In Daniel Goleman ‘s research, it has been proven that if children are trained in emotional intelligence skills, they tend to have better physical and mental health than the average person and have the ability to earn income or have a better job than the average person.
Including that people who are emotionally intelligent are much less likely to commit crimes than the average person.
This research reinforces why children need to learn about emotional intelligence. When children learn about emotional intelligence, for example, what they will gain is:
- Self-Awareness : Children will understand their own feelings and emotions and how their emotions affect others.
- Self Motivation : Children will have more confidence to push themselves towards their goals or what they intend to do.
- Manage Stress : Children will understand and know what are the causes or causes of stress or pressure that occurs to them, and they will be able to find ways to cope and deal with it.
- Making Good Decisions : When children can recognize and understand their emotions, their decision-making abilities improve.
- Building Empathy : Children will understand others better and how their actions and behaviors affect the feelings and emotions of others.
- Communicating Effectively : When children have emotional intelligence skills, they will be able to communicate, talk, and behave with others clearly and effectively.
- Building Relationships : Children will be able to build good relationships with people around them better and more easily.
These are the important benefits that children will gain from having Emotional Intelligence skills.
If Ning had known, learned, and practiced this skill since she was a child or a student, the outcome would not have ended like that. Because Ning would have known immediately how to deal with the anger caused by being criticized. And Ning would have chosen the appropriate way to respond to her boss and colleagues instead of starting a fight with them. Doing so would only have negative results and would also show unprofessionalism.
If we do not want to end up like Nong Ning who made a mistake because of emotions, or do not want our children, grandchildren, or people close to us to be like that, or to be unhappy in our work or in our lives, we must advise them, or even ourselves, to learn this skill from now on, before it is too late.
