Losing Passion is not just a symptom that applies to love. Working people like us may also have a day when we lose our Passion for work. But since we still have to work, work, work, what should we do if we feel that today we have lost our Passion?

This article invites you to read the summary of the discussion on this topic with Professor Ple, Assistant Professor Dr. Chitra Dussadeematha, an expert in developing happiness and personal potential, a lecturer at the Graduate School, Srinakharinwirot University, and Khun Tle Ampika Chanwiriyawuthi, Country HR Director, Dentsu International (Thailand) Co., Ltd., an advertising agency that focuses on the happiness of employees.

We guarantee that you will get good guidelines to deal with the symptoms of losing Passion, which will change the question from “What can I do?” to “How can I do it?”

    What is called Passion?

If you ask 10 working people if they have ever lost their passion for their work, it is expected that more than half of them will answer “yes.” When this happens, how do we deal with it? Can this symptom be cured? What can we do to regain our passion?

Teacher Ple invites us to understand what passion is because people often confuse it with burnout. She explains that passion is a “feeling”, a passion that leads to action. Simply put, it is a feeling of “being into” something, which allows us to overcome obstacles along the way in order to do this or make it better. When we are “in”, we will be happy while doing it. Therefore, we often hear the phrase “Follow your passion”.

    Follow your Passion

In the advertising industry, where there are many young people, Khun Tle Ampika shared her experience that during COVID, almost every employee in every organization is under a lot of stress. The more stressed someone is, the more stressed they are in the advertising industry. And they have to adapt even more because they have to keep up with customers who want to change their business to keep up with the situation. She also told us that in the advertising industry, which requires the power of creativity all the time, Dentsu has 3 principles for taking care of employees. One is to accept the identity of every employee from the first step into the organization. This is to maintain personal passion. Two, we also try to create an ecosystem that requires teamwork and encouragement to create team passion. Three is to add knowledge and create fun and challenging work opportunities to help open up perspectives and perspectives on the world, leading to more creativity in work.

Freedom + Ability + Relationships – The origin of passion.

Teacher Ple continued that when people have passion, they will be enthusiastic and happy, which requires 3 important things as Dentsu is doing: freedom, their own abilities or being able to “get things”, and relationships with other people and the environment around them. When passion is gone, that is, they are “out of heart”, they will start to “give up” because they don’t want to do it or they just do it to get it over with. What we need to watch out for is that even though we have passion, there will still be a period of “stopping”. When we are stressed or encounter problems or obstacles, we need to know how to “take a break” from the routine and start over at a point that helps recharge us. We can go back to our friends or family. If we feel stressed but still have passion, it is a challenge to overcome that stress. If we let stress build up until everything we do seems to stumble, our bodies start to get tired, and those 3 important things are all locked up, to the point where we don’t want to deal with anyone. We should suspect that we may be entering burnout, which is more severe.

Fuel your Passion like Popeye eats spinach

When asked how to know when your passion is running out, Professor Ple suggests waking up every morning. You might want to start by measuring your level. For example, compare it to a traffic light. See if you are in the green, yellow, or red zone. If you are in a zone that is not good or has bad energy, you need to find help. The first thing is to let go of the waste first. Each person has a different method. Some people just want to vent or talk and have someone listen, not someone who gives reasons or advice. Some people start by resting their body and mind first. Then they rest their mind, find their favorite food, like Popeye has spinach to boost their energy. Some people need someone to fill their thoughts, or talk to someone who is like-minded, or go traveling, go to a place that allows them to rest, or be with pets, arrange flowers, plant trees, do gardening, anything that brings them enjoyment and creates a sense of happiness, which will give them the energy to start over again.

Supervisor – HR The original person creates Passion.

What should organizations do if employees start to lose their passion? Khun Tle Ampika shared that “talking and listening with the heart” is a method that should be given importance in making everyone feel safe to talk, and pointed out that supervisors are important people who can create such an atmosphere, such as setting a Golden Rule that every opinion is not wrong. We can try and make mistakes together. And if it doesn’t go as expected, it’s considered learning together. At HR at Dentsu, employees share a passion to strengthen the organization’s physical and mental strength. The Buddy System is used to set a common flag to find pain points and help solve them together. There is job rotation that allows people to try new tasks that lead to new successes and then share those successes. Or giving employees time off work, taking breaks to recharge with their personal passion can also help.

Solve the problem of losing Passion with the human dimension.

Professor Ple concluded that the World Health Organization assessed that in the future, physical and mental problems are likely to be both serious. Some people work hard to earn a living and may think that passion does not affect their work. If the work itself is not fun, but they have coworkers who enjoy working with them and support each other, it can help a lot. Or if you are looking for passion in life, you can try looking at “ikigai”, which suggests being happy with small things around you or finding simple activities that are enjoyable to do, which can create life energy, such as being happy and enjoying cooking. That happiness energy will be promoted back to work. Or some people are happy with volunteer work and feel that life is meaningful when they help others.

When at work, you might share experiences outside of work, so that people have the opportunity to complete each other, to try to do something together, and to help solve whatever happens. That is, to complete the dimension of being human, to get back up when you fall, to refine the mind to move forward without having to see the world too positively, but to see everything as a learning experience.

Employees with passion are the profit of the organization.

Ms. Ampika emphasized that any organization that has happy employees who are fully committed to their work will have multiplied results and be passed on to customers. Customers will be satisfied and able to feel it. In addition to taking care of employees to be happy, the organization can also take care of their families. When it comes to providing mental health advice, it also includes the families of the employees because employees are the assets of the organization. If there are expenses for these matters, it is seen as an investment in the future because the happiness of employees is a huge profit for the organization.
