Philips UVC Disinfection Desk Lamp, an alternative for workers in the era of having to face COVID-19
What is UVC radiation? What germs can it inhibit? And how does it relate to the Philips UVC Disinfection Desk Lamp? Let’s find out the answers.
In the COVID-19 era, we are trying to find various ways to eliminate germs in the house, whether it is using disinfectants such as Dettol (this can be done by yourself, but it is a bit tiring) or hiring a company to spray and kill germs (this may be convenient, but in exchange, it costs a bit more money. Most of the service fees are calculated per time, per square meter sprayed. The starting price is a little over two thousand. The disadvantage is that you have to plan for repeated spraying).
Both of the methods mentioned have many limitations, such as if there are small children and elderly people in the house, it will be difficult during the process. And in terms of expenses, whether it is disinfectant or hiring someone to come and spray each time, it is quite a burden. If we consider the cost, we will find that
The price of Dettol 5 liters is approximately 1,700 baht. If used continuously for cleaning, for a residence with a usable area of approximately 100-120 square meters, it can be used for approximately 1 month.
The price of spraying disinfection service per time for a residence with a usable area of approximately 100-120 square meters is approximately 3,500 baht, but it should be sprayed at least every 3-4 months, depending on planning and risk.
So, in a year, we spend tens of thousands of baht on disinfecting our homes. But we can’t do nothing because at this moment, we don’t know how or when COVID-19 will end. Let’s just say that these things are important and difficult to avoid.
So do we have any better alternatives?
I myself have encountered the same problem as many others. I have spent a lot of money on taking care of, preventing, and eliminating germs in my home because I have many family members, including young children and the elderly. Until I came across UV light that they say can kill the COVID virus.
Did you know? UV light kills viruses.
There has been a lot of talk about UV light, especially during the COVID situation, that it can kill viruses. As a result, many people have put their cloth masks out to dry in the sun, believing that the UV light from the sun will help eliminate the COVID virus.
In addition, there are many types of UV Sterilizer or UV light drying machines that are sold in various forms on the market. There are prices ranging from a few hundred to a few thousand baht. But the concern is the misunderstanding among consumers about UV light, including the dangers that can occur if they buy it without understanding it or buy a low-quality product.
Can UV light really kill germs?
The light from a UV lamp that can deal with viruses must be a lamp that emits UV light that can kill germs only. Just because you see a UV lamp, you can assume that it can be used for everything.
So, we need to understand the important things first: what is UV light, how many types are there, and which types can actually kill germs or viruses?
UV light is a natural light. The source of UV light is the sun. Sunlight contains 3 types of UV light as follows:

UV-A is a ray with a wavelength of 315 – 400 nm. Because sunlight that shines on our planet contains up to 95% UV-A and UV-A has the ability to penetrate through glass and penetrate to destroy the skin layer that contains collagen and elastin, causing people who are frequently exposed to the sun to experience premature skin aging, wrinkles, dark spots, and is also the cause of all types of skin cancer.
UV-B is a ray with a wavelength of 280 – 315 nm. In sunlight, there is about 5% UVB. Although its destructive power does not harm the skin as deeply as UV-A, UV-B is the cause of our skin getting sunburned, burning, red, freckles, and dry skin, including dark spots, or it can also cause skin cancer. We can protect both UV-A and UV-B by using sunscreen lotion with a high Protection grade of UVA (or PA) and Sun Protection Factor (or SPF).
UV-C is a short wavelength radiation with the most energy. It has a wavelength between 100 – 280 nm. UV-C is harmful to all types of living things. It has the ability to kill microorganisms such as viruses, bacteria, fungi, and yeast, including being able to kill viruses. Because UV-C is extracted and filtered out in the atmosphere by ozone before it reaches the earth and our skin, we are not directly affected or harmed by UV-C from the sun.
Therefore, UV-C radiation sources have been created for medical use, to kill germs in the air and on the surfaces of objects in scientific laboratories, hospitals, wastewater treatment, or drinking water production, etc.
However, UV-C is a dangerous ray. If exposed directly, it will cause skin inflammation and burns. If exposed to high concentrations, it may cause conjunctivitis, eye irritation, tearing, photosensitivity, red eyes, and in the long term, pterygium and cataracts may occur, leading to loss of vision.
Review Philips UVC Disinfection Desk Lamp
Finally, I had to try using a UV-C lamp. I spent quite a while researching and deciding. I finally decided on Philips and bought it through Lazada to try it out at home.

Why did I choose Philips UVC Disinfection Desk Lamp when there are many other brands to choose from?
This kind of thing requires confidence and trust that if used, it must really work and must be safe, not harmful to the user and family members.
In particular, the brand name Philips is already credible. It is a world-class company with expertise in light bulbs, so you can be confident. I also went to find more information and found that Philips has experimented with their UVC bulbs in the laboratory and found that they can kill 99% of the SARS CoV 2 virus in just 6 seconds. Therefore, when compared to the COVID-19 virus (COVID-19 and SARS are coronaviruses, but different strains), it is very possible that UVC rays can eliminate the COVID-19 virus.

When it comes to safety, you have to be confident.
UVC Disinfection Desk Lamp comes with high efficiency UV-C light bulb (254nm) and has a microwave sensor to detect the movement of people, pets, and objects within 3 meters. This means that if there is movement, the system will stop working immediately.

This device has TIS and a 1-year warranty. The lamp life is about 9,000 hours. It is easy to use and not complicated. There are only a few buttons to press.

As for the price, one set is 2,490 baht, not as expensive as you might think. We can use it for a long time, for ten years. It is really worth it.
