Resilience – Decoding the test of endurance, perseverance, and fighting to overcome the crisis. Who knows when our work life situation will be disruptive? Even if we are careful and plan well, there may be uncontrollable events.
The current COVID-19 outbreak has caused serious damage. There is no need to talk about the instability or damage that has occurred. Just know that if anyone is “resilient and persistent”, they will be able to survive. It is not just a matter of solving the problem by being “tough” physically.
What to do when almost half of the employees are infected with COVID-19!?!? And senior executives have a clear policy that “employees must not die and must still be able to support their families.” Working people like Ms. Am Natthapimon Pengpao, Director of Human Resources, which is the department directly responsible for taking care of employees, shared her experience of getting through stressful times by taking care of her “mind” and that of her colleagues.
Set your base with “mindfulness”
When dealing with the unpredictable, the first thing to do is to manage your own mind. That is, be “mindful”, do not get carried away by feelings or thoughts, and try to “be the mindfulness of the organization” that will help everyone stand firm and try to understand everyone’s needs. Set a goal to give confidence to workers at all levels, whether they are executives, supervisors, or employees, to try to help manage each other’s minds, be aware but not panic, and be ready to think of new management methods to cope with what is happening.
Open a safe space for communication
Close communication is another thing that needs to be done. Create a safe space for employees to communicate. This could be working with a coach, who is an external person, or finding tools to open the heart, allowing employees to talk and consult voluntarily, such as the Friend Card, which contains reminders and ideas. During the discussion process, there will be breathing exercises to relieve anxiety. Then listen to everything, both work and personal problems. Listen slowly and ask questions so that he can understand his own thoughts and feelings, so that he can see himself more clearly how he will deal with the problems that arise.
Listen without judgment
Listening is the key to success. People who act as coaches do not necessarily have to be outsiders of the organization. Everyone can be a coach for each other. Start with the question of how much you listen to others and how much you can find. Do not rush to judgment, which may cause emotions or feelings to affect or conflict, leading to a lack of empathy. Instead, listen with your heart to help them escape suffering and find some happiness amidst fragile situations. Being aware of each other’s suffering, which may not only mean the people who work with us, but also their families, helps create a feeling and atmosphere of “sharing happiness and sorrow”.
Manage in a concrete manner
When “mindfulness” leads to a stable foundation and morality leads the way, everyone in the organization cares and participates in solving problems of “hmm, hmm, and so on,” resulting in a clear and tangible contingency plan for every possible situation, such as what to do if more employees are infected, designing measures to assess the risk, preparing a report to the government, providing a hospital for employees to stay in throughout the quarantine period, and providing good food and accommodation. All of this is to ensure that if they get sick, there will be someone to take care of them and they will feel confident in coming to work continuously.
Let’s fight together.
Taking care of the “mind”, timely and thorough communication, and individual management lead to a positive overall impact. It can create a team that dares to communicate, build leadership, be resilient, and work for each other because they no longer have to worry about themselves. Work does not stop, and it is still possible to produce for customers according to the overwhelming orders because employees are willing to work together. Customers are confident because the results are evident.
Maintaining “mindfulness” means that we capture everything still, amidst unexpected fluctuations. It’s like we have a magnifying glass to see small things that may hide solutions, and it gives us the wisdom to solve or cope with the problems we have to face. It’s also the starting point for an important ability for people working in the present era, which is resilience, or the ability to recover or rise up quickly from weakness.
